Under the general supervision of the director of general surgery, the Advanced Practice Provider provides care and evaluation of surgical patients on general inpatient surgical floors, the operating room and the emergency department under the supervision of a surgical attending. Evaluates and treats chronic and acute episodic illnesses, minor injuries, accidents, and other injuries/illnesses. Performs selected laboratory testing, referrals to physicians as needed, writes prescriptions, and performs office procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols, and available equipment. Works under the supervision of the director and faculty in the care and treatment of patients.


  • Responds to all trauma consultations and serves in an initial consulting role
  • Evaluates the trauma victim and institutes immediate therapy
  • Performs first assistant duties in the operating room
  • Attends to patient care needs on surgical units
  • Responds to nursing and medical staff queries and pages concerning patient needs and condition
  • Attends clinical rounds pre and postoperatively with the surgeon of record providing pertinent information related to patient care needs
  • Assists in patient management for multiple disciplines including Orthopedics, ENT, Urology and Vascular
  • Coordinates need for consultation of specialty specific services as necessary
  • Performs surgically related procedures following appropriate granting of privileges prior to independent performance
  • Serves as a member of applicable committees
  • Orders and interprets results of diagnostic tests such as X-rays, electrocardiograms, and blood work, and interprets test results
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as injections, suturing, tubes, drains and wound care
  • Administers medications and provides fluid management under direction of supervising attending
  • Performs Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, maintains ACLS and BLS certification
  • Develops and implements patient care plans, instructs and counsels patients, and records progress
  • Dictates, documents all admission, progress and discharge findings
  • Exhibits organizational communication and leadership skills, accountability, judgment and decision making
  • Provides general health education regarding matters such as proper diet, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance



  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner educational program.
  • National certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Licensed to practice in Michigan
  • Current CPR Certificate


  • EMR and computer competent  
  • Two years of clinical experience preferred
  • Experience in an Academic Medical Center or teaching environment preferred
  • Self-motivated, disciplined, high integrity
